If You're a Nurse, Dress Like a Professional Please.

By Deb Bloom

The next time you're in a hospital, doctor's office or other medical facility, take a look at some of the uniforms on the nurses and other medical staff. Take notice of how sloppy some of the staff is dressed; uniforms that are wrinkled or look dirty, white shoes that aren't white, colors that are unflattering or unprofessional or just an overall unkempt appearance.

Consider this a make over for medical staff or a reminder to take an extra look in the mirror before you leave for work. I'm sure it's been thought that 'the patients won't care' or 'everyone else dresses like this' or 'I'm so tired I don't care' but those thoughts need to be revamped because patient's DO care and so does the other staff and probably your boss, too.

Here are some tips to help you look professional and be comfortable at the same time, even if you're in a hurry.

Buy New Uniforms
There are tons of websites out there to buy sharp looking, professional uniforms at a discount.

Properly Clean Your Uniforms
Keep your uniforms clean, scrub your shoes, pre-treat stains before laundering. If your place of work gets you dirty, consider changing into scrubs at work. Many times they will provide you with scrubs that you can change into and leave there.

Keep Yourself Clean
No explanation needed, right?

Avoid Sloppiness
If possible, talk to other co-workers and consider a dress code. Have everyone wear the same colors or combination of colors. Take a look at some of the other people you work with and use that as a guide. Most uniforms are wash and wear and don't require ironing, but make sure they don't look like they were just in the bottom of a hamper all night.

Don't Use Your Uniform for Display
It's unprofessional when there are tons of things on your uniforms. Avoid lots of pins and badges and cutesy little bears and buttons...Keep it to a minimum. It's understandable to have some of this on your uniform if you work in a pediatrician's office but not really necessary and could also be hazardous if a child grabs something off of your top. Try buying uniforms with lots of pockets and you can have prizes in the pockets for the kids or dog treats for the pets in a vets office.

I'm a nurse. I know you can be run ragged at work. I know the hours are sometimes long and the schedule is grueling. I know it's easy to get sloppy and feel frazzled. I also realize comfort is very important but it should also be just as important to look professional, clean and neat. Have a little pride in the way you dress when you go to work. You've spent a lot of time and money on your education. Try to at least look like it when you go to work.
