The Biggest Scam Of All

By Graham Maddison

I just arrived home from my busy schedule at work ( Saturday 12.55pm) I am presently on 24 hour standby and get called out at any time day or night, to hopefully restore power to homes which have lost their electricity supply as a result of wiring or switching failure.

Anyway, having just arrived home I felt an immediate need for food. I needed something quickly to stave off my hunger pangs. I looked in my refrigerator to see what I could prepare quickly before my next call out and found 3 eggs. “Mmmmmmm I know, I’ll have fried eggs on toast. I haven’t had that in a long time and it is quick to prepare” I thought to myself. Three slices of toast and three fried eggs, sunny side up with a dash of worcester sauce and a sprinkling of salt. Fantastic. It was just what I needed.

Now fully nourished and feeling pleased with myself that I hadn’t broken a single egg yolk, (well I am a man who can’t cook after all) I set about tidying up after myself, washing the dishes etc and throwing the egg box away…..It was at this point, that i realized “The biggest scam of all” ……on the egg box was a “Use by Date” of 2nd September 2008 ……I used them on the 26th September 2008! By my reckoning, that is 24 days past the use by date! Guess what? one week later and I am still alive, I did not suffer any ill effects of consuming these eggs. Maybe I was just lucky? I really don’t know, but what I can tell you, is that I have on numerous other occasions, eaten foods well past their “best before” or “use by” date. Obviously, I like to think I use my common sense when using such foodstuffs and if I do knowingly use them, I always use my eyes and nose to ensure I am happy with them before cooking and consuming. I understand that there is no guarantee of safety using this method.

Because I have used many many products over a period of time in this manner and without any side effects, it really leads me to one conclusion and that is that the government is in collusion with the foods industry.

Now I realize that “use by dates” are only advisory as laid down by the UK Foods Standards Agency, but I personally know of many people who, when a food product is approaching anywhere near the use by date, they either use it immediately, or throw it away as advised by the agency. It doesn’t take a brilliant mathematician to work out how much extra money is being earned by the food reatilers as a result.

There is a report about food waste:- An estimated 6.7 million tonnes of household food waste is produced each year in the UK, most of which could have been eaten

There is also the NHS website which gives advice on causes and symptoms of food poisoning.

When I was a lad (many years ago) there were no such things as refrigerators or freezers, except for the very wealthy, we kept our foodstuffs in larders or a meat safe. There was never any waste, certainly not compared to todays level. So why now? It is said we all now live in a “Nanny State” being told what is supposed to be good or bad for us and I tend to agree. Don’t get me wrong, the advice given by some of the Government body’s is first class and should be considered carefully.

As an internet marketer, I am constantly aware of scams of one sort or another and do everything in my power to avoid them, but I cannot help thinking that somehow, we are all victims of The Biggest Scam Of All!

I agree, what a waste, when there's so many hungry people.
'Use by' dates are primarily used to control stock rotation only, and not a measure of the estimated quality of the product after the suggested date expires. Tinned and dry packet products especially are still consumable many months after the 'use by' date expiry. The consumer demand for insisting upon 'fresh' foods led to suppliers being forced to use 'display until' and 'use by' information.

It's a shame to waste the food, agreed - but I'm not sure it's a "scam" as such... more a case of government agencies and so on playing it safe. After all, their job is to minimise risk, not to maximise benefit (which would probably be a little more riks-inclined).

Besides, can you imagine the hysterical headlines in the Daily Wail if someon died because the eggs were off when the date said they shouldn't be? ;)
