U.N.'s Eradication of Poverty
Fight Poverty with Microfinance Every day 50,000 people die from poverty-related causes, and nearly half the world's population lives in extreme poverty. But Microfinance offers an innovative and powerful solution. Microfinance empowers the self-employed poor with the financial tools they need to work their way out of poverty. A small loan can buy raw goods in bulk, increasing sales and profits. Savings can be stored safely in a savings account. Insurance can offset losses from natural disasters. Microfinance ultimately improves the lives of millions of people, helping pay for school fees, put a roof overhead and keep families healthy. October 17th, 2008 is the 21st Annual International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Please urge U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to advocate for microfinance on this day. Ask U.N. to fight worldwide poverty, please send e-mail here: Form Letter

Contributor's Note
Comments: I have studied how effective Microfinancing is in nations such as Kenya, Cambodia, Nicaragua and Bangladesh and think its one way the First World and truely aid the Third World on a person to person basis. Microfinance provides low-income people with the financial tools they need -- including small loans, savings and insurance -- to work their way out of poverty. I believe that poverty is the most serious moral issue in our world. The poor deserve our help, to lift them out of poverty and then to remain out of it.

Kiva is another source of micro finance, this site also shows journals of participants and ther percentage of loans paid back to the organization.
The United Nations has NOT done it's job in my book. There are so many people who have donated money and time to this cause. But, you see so little that has gone to making sure that these people learn ways to make them self sufficient. Band aids do not work and I fear that most of the money does not go into the right hands. With all this technology, all this help, all this money someone is keeping them poor!
