What Is Link Dilution?

By Cleary Macgoogan

Link dilution is a series of events that take place on a given web page due to a number of circumstances.

The most common understanding of what link dilution is, is when the more links that appear on a page - The less value a search engine places on those links and thus the value is diluted.

Applied

When webmasters seek to boost the value of their blog by using article marketing, they write articles for directories and for their article they receive a backlink. If there are no other outbound links on that page then one may assume that the link has 100% value.

When a page has several outgoing links and you have one of those the value of your link is proportionately devalued.

How?

Let's say you have one link on a page with ten - Your link has 10% of the one link value.

It is highly uncertain which percentage a search engine devalues the presence of a link by in relation to the surrounding ones, but it is certain that this happens.

In Conclusion

The only sure thing you can do as a link builder is to only add links to resources that don't splatter there pages with external links.
